Party Statement on the Repeated Destruction & Theft of Democratic Campaign Signs

October 16, 2020 – Democratic campaign signs have been disproportionately targeted for regular and repetitive theft and/or destruction in Talbot County and across the Eastern Shore. The Talbot County Democratic Party condemns all acts of destruction against campaign signs and materials of any political leaning. Further, the Party highly recommends citizens take every effort to protect their signs by bringing signs in at night, hiding cameras to record vandals, and filing a police report each time a sign is targeted.

To that extent, as true supporters of an equal and just system of law and order, the Talbot County Democratic Party is announcing that a report was made this morning against two named individuals who unsuccessfully attempted to steal campaign signs from homes in Unionville. This is a sad but very necessary action. Trespassing on private property and repeatedly restricting individuals’ abilities to exercise their first amendment right is a form of intimidation and violence. Our community must enforce a zero-tolerance policy towards the malicious efforts of some to silence our neighbors.

These individuals are the first who have been apprehended, but they are certainly not the only people responsible for this divisive, destructive, and undemocratic behavior. Additionally, while Unionville has been the target of repeated attacks, this is a problem rampant throughout Talbot County. In support of our shared goal to hold criminals accountable for their actions, the Talbot County Democratic Party is seeking the public’s assistance in identifying the individual caught on video destroying a Biden-Harris highway sign in Trappe. The sign, located at Howell Point Road Cutoff, has been targeted for destruction by this individual multiple times. If you have any information regarding the identity of this individual(s), please contact us. Additionally, if your sign is damaged, destroyed, or stolen and you have video evidence, please do not hesitate to share with us to promote to our audiences.

“When they go low, we go high.” We do not respond to violence with violence; we do not answer hate with hate. If your sign is destroyed, come to our Democratic Headquarters and get two more. Do not retaliate, always report lawlessness to local law enforcement. Most importantly, do not let them take away your voice; do not let them take away your democracy. Stay strong and stay safe as we work to take back our country on November 3. They can steal your sign, but they cannot steal your vote.
