A 2024 Election Message
Last night’s results did not go as we would have liked, either nationally or locally. While there are several clear victories that we should celebrate, we understand that it is difficult to overcome the sadness over losing what could’ve been and the fear of what may come.
We must take a moment to celebrate some truly historic victories that Marylanders can be incredibly proud of. Maryland has elected its first Black woman to the U.S. Senate with Angela Alsobrooks! Furthermore, over 70% of Marylanders have voted to protect reproductive freedom by enshrining it in our state Constitution, with an impressive 65% of Talbot County voters supporting the amendment.
At the same time, we are heartbroken over the loss of two outstanding school board members, Candace Henry and Anna Howie, who brought unmatched expertise and dedication to their roles. However, we are hopeful and energized by the potential victory of Cynthia Jurrius, an Independent in District 6. This win could protect our school board from the extremists of our local Moms For Liberty group.
Talbot Democrats: you should be incredibly proud of the work you put in this election – you truly gave it everything you had. Being a Democrat on the Eastern Shore isn’t easy and certainly isn’t for the faint of heart. Our 200+ volunteers stand on the right side of history, fighting for values that matter deeply to our community and future.
This election was a setback – not only for our nation, but for Talbot as well. Yet, we remain hopeful and committed to advancing our Democratic values, both locally and nationally. Let’s honor the wins, learn from the losses, and continue the fight for a future that reflects our ideals.
Our values don’t vanish when an election is lost. They don’t fade in the face of setback. The ideals that drive us – equity, kindness, justice, compassion – are so deeply rooted, so woven into the fabric of our communities, that they’ll be here tomorrow, and the day after that. Every act of kindness, every conversation with a neighbor, every moment of standing up for what’s right—those are building blocks for something greater.
It is easy to let anger or despair consume us. History teaches us that real change isn’t won in a single election or by a single leader. Real change takes persistence. It takes vision. And it takes people like us, showing up every day with the quiet strength to make a difference where we can.
This country is still ours, and every time we engage – whether it’s in county councils, school boards, or our own homes – we’re shaping the future. There are significant wins that we should celebrate – we hope you take some time to reflect on the good, tangible things that came out of this election.
So today we take a breath. Tomorrow, we get to work. Because the truth is, hope only becomes real when we embody it, when we make it as much a part of our communities as the air we breathe. Let’s lean on each other, hold each other up, and keep going. This great American story isn’t over—not by a long shot. As long as we are willing to keep writing it, the best parts are still ahead.
If there is anything we are certain of, it is that Talbot Democrats still have what it takes. We are resilient, deeply committed to our democracy, and capable of building real community. There are more than enough of us who still believe in democracy, in the freedom to live with dignity, and in a future we can shape together.
And together, we will prevail.
From the bottom of our hearts, thank you.
The Talbot County Democratic Central Committee
